Why can councils discharge sewerage into rivers, yet I’ll bet that the local farmers will be fined and blamed entirely for the state of the Manawatu River?
It is regarded as one of the most polluted rivers in the country and researchers are trying to find solutions. Well, dairy farmers are constantly changing their farming practices to keep up with new regulations; however, what about the councils?
There are solutions to sewerage for these councils but they are too costly, they say. Hello . . .? Do they not think that the effluent systems we have to upgrade on farms are any expense on top of the rising costs of compliance?
No, their side of the blame will be swept under the rug and the farmers will continue to cower with fingers pointed at them. And then these hypocritical councils are the first to fine farmers for effluent discharge. In the meantime, research centres will be given millions to research solutions. Hmmmmmmm, just like climate change; let’s give them more money to justify their existence in the world of research.
I would like to know if the state of the Horowhenua Lake has been documented lately to show any changes or clean-ups since treated sewerage from Levin was dumped in the lake for decades and contributed to it degradation.
The double standards in this country never cease to amaze me; it’s as bad as some of the racist verbal diarrhoea that flows out of Hone Harawira’s mouth. Just imagine if one of our other MPs said anything close to what he has said.
It makes me sick. Why are these bureaucrats not held responsible for their behavior?
