With Chinese investment in Synlait and Hong Kong-based NZ Natural Dairy planning to open a milk processing plant and own a large amount of dairy farms in New Zealand, don’t you think it is time that the government perhaps started acting like a true blue National government and looking at how to support its Kiwi farmers?
Now that John Key has backtracked on the mining, surely he can pull his minions off that and allocate some time to reviewing some legislation to help out farmer owned co-ops like Fonterra rather than all of his overseas mates.
I know we can’t offer him a free-trade deal but I’m happy to make him some cheese if it helps him help us. Do you think that will work? Or do you think a nice fried rice?
John might like to start by calculating whether it is fair to continue to treat Fonterra as an evil monopoly and look at what they have achieved for farmers – love them or hate them, they have held our heads above water.
He could review the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act (DIRA) under which independent processors can each seek up to 50 million litres of raw milk from Fonterra.
If we are to have foreign investment and growth of competition, let’s make it fair competition. Other processors in New Zealand who are still receiving milk supplied from Fonterra have a healthy farmer supply base and it is time for a review.
