New group to monitor animal activists

New group to monitor animal activists

22 Feb, 2010 02:45 PM
THE Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) this week launched HumaneWatch.org to monitor and analyze the activities of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and to "ask hard questions about HSUS," according to an announcement.

HSUS raises $100 million per year from members who believe their contributions are going to local pet shelters to rescue cats and dogs but, in reality, less than 0.5% of HSUS's budget goes to local humane societies, CCF director of research David Martosko said. Instead, contributors to HSUS are "bankrolling" far-reaching, radical propaganda to promote an anti-meat agenda, he said.

Additional information on the watchdog effort is available at www.HumaneWatch.org. CCF is funded through food companies, restaurants and individual members.

Humane society changes name

The former Humane Society of Park County in Cody, Wyo., has changed its name to Park County Animal Shelter to avoid being confused with HSUS, according to board president Leigh Dvariskish, who said many of the political pursuits supported by HSUS "aren't popular here locally."

Walmart moves toward cage-free eggs

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the largest supermarket system in the US, has reported that all eggs that the company's stores sell under its own private label "Great Value" are now sourced from cage-free housing operations, according to an announcement by HSUS this week.

HSUS said it has subsequently withdrawn its shareholder resolution asking that Walmart disclose its progress in moving toward cage-free eggs.

Walmart's "move is a positive one, and we hope its competitors will follow suit," said Paul Shapiro, senior director of the HSUS factory farming campaign.

HSUS is an industrial activist and lobbying organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., that advocates vegetarianism.

Skater moves after threats

American Olympic skater Johnny Weir, whose costume includes fur, had planned to stay at a hotel in Vancouver, B.C., but moved to the Olympic Village where security is tighter after receiving what he called "very serious threats" from anti-fur activists.

HSUS are not anti-meat but anti-factory farms, get it right.

reply to "Get Real": Don't know where you get that idea from. This is taken directly from their website. "Replace animal products with readily available vegetarian options." That sounds to me like a plea for people to go vegetarian. Don't pull the wool over people's eyes. HSUS and it's sister Peta want the complete abolition of animals used for food and clothing. They make that VERY clear.

Get Real, You should check out the depth of corruption within the HSUS. I know you are a dedicated animal rights person for which I cannot deny your right to be. However, HSUS is a very suspect organisation with allegations of rorting and the siphoning of money raised by donations to end up in the directors pockets and lots more. I recommend that you do not support this organisation overtly as you may be tarred as supporting these practices within an animal rights organisation. You don't need that do you?

Wayne Pacelle (HSI) & Ingrid Newkirk (PETA) both head organisations that are at the 'loony left', with both undergoing investigation in the US for their support of eco-terrorism activities that have, I believe, led to several deaths of farmers. They all push the agenda of 'animals before humans' & will stop at nothing to achieve their aims. They target gullible & naive wealthy Americans (& Australians) including many celebrities for funding, under the guise of local animal shelters (google HSI & Hurricane Katrina animal rescue efforts). If you scratch the surface of some of the environment groups (WWF? ACF?) here in Australia, you will find links back to both of these organisations. They are not the cute & cuddly movement they make themselves out to be.

Jay is absolutely right. Groups like HSUS and PETA dupe well-meaning, animal-loving people. For example, people who have entrusted stray cats and dogs to PETA in the US don't realise PETA puts nearly all of them down instead of finding homes for them like most animal shelters do. Check out petakillsanimals.com for actual figures.

These groups are terrorists, pure and simple, they will stop at nothing to scare people - is that not the definition of terrorism? When caught they should be locked up at Guantanamo Bay (is that how its spelt?)!

What would be so wrong with a vegetarian world anyhow? Millions of people are actually starving to death in our needless and wasteful meat eating world aren't they?

Barker me eating meat does not starve the third world. Lack of non corrupt government and leadership is the problem. When guns are put before butter and despots steal the aid little wonder. Uganda and Rhodesia were food bowls of africa before the descent into tribalism.

Very few of these activist groups would survive an in-depth audit. $100 million buys a lot of corruption.
