WET times are set to continue across most of Australia due to continuing La Nina conditions, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) reports.
In the latest ENSO report, the BoM states the majority of computer models show the Pacific Ocean will continue to cool over coming months, indicating typical La Nina conditions such as increased rainfall and warm nights will continue until at least the end of the year.
While surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean have warmed slightly in the past fortnight, the BoM reported the ocean had cooled below the surface in the same period, which indicated the warming trend was likely to be short lived.
"The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remains well above La NiƱa thresholds, cloudiness over the central Pacific remains suppressed and trade winds, although weakening slightly over the past fortnight, continue to be stronger than the long term average in the western Pacific," the report stated.
Persisting La Nina conditions could also translate into an eventful cyclone season come summer.
