 Rudd advised to reconsider ETS

Rudd advised to reconsider ETS

14 Jan, 2010 07:40 AM
ONE of the Government's key business advisers on the emissions trading scheme has called for a fresh look at whether the plan should go ahead.

Dick Warburton, chairman of the panel set up last year to advise on emissions-intensive trade-exposed activities, said that after Copenhagen's failure, the matter should be debated afresh.

He is organising a round-table of company executives, bureaucrats and experts - including supporters and critics - to consider the pros and cons and alternatives of a trading scheme.

His move comes as Opposition Leader Tony Abbott tonight gives his first speech as leader on the environment, arguing that while the environment is important, it is not just about climate. He will seek to redirect focus to areas where Australia can make a difference on its own, including water.

Mr Warburton told The Age that despite intense political debate about the emissions scheme, important aspects had not been dealt with adequately.

''Chairmen and CEOs and the public have very poor knowledge of what the ETS involves.''

The round-table should be held by the end of this month, he said.

The Government plans to bring in legislation incorporating last year's deal with the Opposition - which prompted the change of leadership - as soon as Parliament resumes next month.

''I think there should be a delay in whatever we do until we have a clear picture of the best course,'' Mr Warburton said. ''We need to get it right.''

Mr Warburton is chairman of Tandou and the Magellan Flagship Fund, chairman of the Board of Taxation and a former member of the Reserve Bank board. He personally believes the climate change science is not settled and would favour a carbon tax or other alternative to a trading scheme.

A round-table would give some indication of how opinion in big companies is moving after Copenhagen.

Other business sources expect a weakening of support from business for quickly passing the legislation.

An important pointer will be the attitude of the Business Council of Australia, but it is yet to consider its position after Copenhagen.

The Government has constantly repeated the argument that business wants legislation passed as soon as possible to provide certainty.

Little Kevie need the money from his TAX to give to the Western suburb beer drinking, smoking, poker machine club patrons to buy their votes, much the same as with the Rudd money that was given out.

Can't wait to see how brave Penny & Mr KRudd are when they nominate Australia's emissions reduction target. Don't forget it is due in just 16 days Penny.

the ETS scheme is just another way to levy a huge tax impost on the Australian tax payer to impress and also to increase the prestige of KRudd and cronies in the UN. Remember the enormous contribution that each of the developed nations (KRudd's government included) is pledging to donate to help 'developing nations' deal with climate change. They are hoping to impress with their largesse at the Australian taxpayers espense. Well I for one, am not impressed. The money will be better spent on improving our parlous education system or perhaps, on the public health system. Where, for instance in Qld, there is a nine year waiting list for public dental treatment . O.k. for the Qld Government, because most of the aged pensioners on it will have died of old age before their name is reached on the list- thus solving the problem. I guess as a nation, we get what we vote for and only hope that the blinkers will be removed from the eyes of enough of us before the next elections both state and Federal to oust this excuse of a government. if not, we will soon, if we are not already, be in the same mess that we were before they were booted out last time.

Don't you just love that line, "business wants certainty"? Of course we do but we need a sack of bull$hit, ideology and expensive posturing like a hole in the head. What we need most is for Wong and the departmental spivs to follow due process and conduct full and balanced assessments, provide a proper range of realistic outcomes, with their realistic probabilities of occurrance, and the full range of options to deal with them. The crap that Wong has dished up to date is way below minimum corporate standards of risk assessment and options analysis. And if responsible corporate officials are not taking steps to ensure that Wong comes at least within cooee of best practise standards then they had better go top up their own professional indemnity cover. And they should think long and hard before they tie their corporate brand to a cart full of village idiots.

There are many things that can be done in Australia to improve land and the water supply - we are an inventive and resourceful lot as we have already shown over the years. Creative thinking!! An emissions trading scheme will make money for a few and be an extra cost for the many with no benefits to the land, water supply or pollution. So what's the point of proceeding with it?

Fact is Kevin has gone waaaay out on the ETS limb. Now he can hear it creaking and splintering behind him. Can he hit back to safety before it breaks and dumps him into political oblivion.

The rancid stench of rotting Labor party sentiment wafts off the dead and decomposing body of the ETS, the question little Kevi has to answer is how to hide the body.

KRudd will think long and hard about what is best for KRudd. Of course his recent 'Me Too' friend Malcolm Turnbull will have his spoiling tactics upset if Rudd makes any change... incredible to think we have 'ego based' men like these leading our country!!??

It is a lot easier, isn't it, Ian Mott, to scatter a lot of personal insults and intemperate accusations in commentary, than to offer something with even a blush of intelligence and considered thought. You do not even appear smart or experienced enough to realise your overblown rhetoric destroys any (if there ever is any) value in a point you are trying to make. You exhibit the objectivity of an English bovver boy at an international soccer game.
