The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation needs volunteers for its annual collection day, October 8. If you can donate a few hours for a good cause, people are needed for Kerikeri, Waipapa, Highland Park, Ngatea, Paeroa, and if you’re willing to take on Parliament there’s someone is needed there and in the capital city’s CBD. Breast Cancer affects one in nine New Zealand women, but with education and detection it no longer needs to be a fatal disease. If you are interested please call 0800 902 732 or email volunteer@nzbcf.org.nz
The easiest way for you to help out is to donate to one of The NZBCF’s Pink Army volunteers on Pink Ribbon St Appeal on Friday, October 8.
Over 6000 volunteers will hit the streets across the country donning their tiaras and angel wings, pink hats or wigs and selling pink ribbons in exchange for a gold coin donation.
NZBCF executive Trustee Heather Shotter says that it is important that everyone gets involved this October, no matter how big or small their involvement is.
“Whether it was taking action by booking in for a mammogram, encouraging loved ones to be breast aware, taking part in a community fundraising event or donating to The Foundation, everyone is able to play their part and take action this October to help reduce the number of New Zealand women developing and dying from breast cancer,” she said.
Key events this October are:
* Oct 1: Global Illumination: The Global Illumination campaign was launched in 2000 with prominent landmarks across the globe lighting up pink to mark the start of Breast Cancer Action Month. Auckland’s Sky Tower along with other key New Zealand monuments will be showing their support this October.
* Oct 2: Dove Pink Star Walk: You can help The Foundation walk the walk for breast cancer survivors and honour those who we have lost to the disease. Held on Saturday October 02 The Dove Pink Star Walk is a 5km walk through Auckland Domain.
* Oct 8: Pink Ribbon Street Appeal: The Pink Army volunteers will be scattered throughout the country selling pink ribbons in exchange for a gold coin donation.

Where your money goes:
The NZBCF is dedicated to fighting against the incidence and effects of breast cancer in our community. The money raised during October will go towards:
* Our education programmes to promote risk reduction through early detection and positive lifestyle choices
* Investments in research and medical support which aim to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment offered to women with breast cancer
* Our community outreach programmes that help women return to their normal lives as quickly as possible after treatment. These include Pink Pilates, a personalised therapeutic programme offered to women recovering from breast cancer surgery that aims to rebuild strength and confidence post surgery, and Sweet Louise, a programme which offers a broad range of support services to provide uplifting experiences and practical help to women coping with treatment and its day-to-day challenges.
* Our advocacy which focuses on the development of guidelines to improve consistency of care with every aspect of breast cancer
* And for women living with life limiting cancer, we look to provide them and their families with the support, comfort and care required to cope better with their treatment and its day-to-day challenges
