THE interstate battle of the lamb prices has continued over the past week with the Cowra saleyards setting a new national record price of $240 last Friday, a $6 raise on Ballarat’s $234 lambs earlier in the week.
“It’s unbelievable,” NC Bellamy agent John Bargwanna said.
“It’s Victoria against New South Wales.”
The 39 Cowra lambs from Stuart and Andrew Baxter of Tavern Park were estimated by the National Livestock Reporting Service to have a carcase weight of 39kg and skin price of $27, bringing them out at $5.46 a kilogram cwt.
On Monday Dubbo came close when it sold 39 lambs for $237.60 for Christie and Hood clients PF and DM Foran. The NLRS estimated the lambs would have dressed out at 38 kilograms and with a $27 skin, their carcase weight price was $5.54 a kg.
Bendigo agents also gave the Cowra price their best shot on Monday, when 28 Dorset cross lambs from FP Nevins and Co clients BJ and PJ Meighan sold for $237. The lambs were estimated to weigh 36 kg cwt for a dressed weight price of $5.75 a kg.
On Tuesday, TB White and Sons client, the Guthrie family of Bullarook, sold 28 lambs for $239 at Ballarat, just one dollar short of the record.
