Gearing up for 'The Green Farmer'

11 Jan, 2010 09:07 AM
With just over 80 days until the last Sunday in March (March 28), 24 farming families around the country are now in top gear as they prepare to welcome visitors onto their farms for Federated Farmers Farm Day 2010.

“With the 2010 theme of ‘The Green Farmer’, farmers are keen to show how their farm fits within the environment,” says Don Nicolson, Federated Farmers president.

“We are proud to create this farming stage and look forward to sharing some of the agricultural industry’s stories and characters.

“We invite everyone to see for themselves on 28 March what farmers do and how they do it. What’s easily overlooked is the positive impact farmers have on the environment, as guardians over a portion of the nation’s land and biodiversity.

“Farms are highly visible operations that come under scrutiny daily, but the public doesn’t often get the chance to talk to a farmer and hear what happens on a working farm. We want to help people become better informed and Farm Day is a fun way of sharing our workplace.

“A key activity of Farm Day will be the opportunity to have a guided farm walk, escorted by a local farmer. No question will be off limits and our farmers will share their knowledge openly with visitors. We aim to show how we produce great food and to inspire people to consider a career in the agricultural industry.

“Farm Day is an interactive experience where family and friends will be able to see from a grass roots perspective what goes on inside the farm gate.

“The 24 farms are to be announced shortly and will include sheep and beef, dairy, cropping, goats, citrus and bees. Everyone will be able to see their favourite farm animals and have a go at some farm work.

“So mark off 28 March 2010 in your calendar and take up Federated Farmers invitation to explore a local farm,” Mr Nicolson said.
