22 Jul, 2010 04:43 PM
The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council has today elected Simon Couper as its new Chair. The election follows the decision of incumbent Chair Blue Read to retire after being Chair of the Council since 2007.

Simon was educated at Waipu and Auckland and graduated with a B.Com in Economics from Otago University. After several years banking experience in New Zealand and the U.K., he took over the family farm in 2000. He was appointed to the Shareholders’ Council in 2004.

“I’m looking forward to working together with Councillors to strongly represent the supplying shareholders of Fonterra,” Mr Couper said.

“There is much work to do, particularly ahead of the introduction of Trading Among Farmers, and I look forward to working with Councillors, the Board and Management of Fonterra in the interests of our farmers,” he said.

Ian Brown has been elected unopposed as Deputy Chair of the Council. The election follows the decision of incumbent Deputy Chair Campbell Shearer to retire after being Council Deputy Chair since 2008

Ian has progressed through the dairy industry and now farms in Tokoroa. Ian joined the Shareholders Council in 2006.
