Quality entries make up for drop in numbers

24 Apr, 2009 12:13 PM
WHILE total headage was a little less than previous years, the overall quality made up for the shortfall at the Royal Easter Show held in Auckland, April 9-13.

Many complimentary remarks were bestowed on the winning exhibits – they were particularly enthusiastically described by the six officiating judges.

Always of great interest to the urban attendees, the spectacular beef cattle section is traditionally a great drawcard at the Royal Easter Show. The public was not disappointed by this year’s display.

For the ninth time the Glenanthony Simmental Stud owned by Tony and Glenda Thompson from Waipukarau won the coveted Meat & Wool Cup. This is a record and a fitting tribute to these exhibitors for their efforts in exhibiting a large team of cattle in Auckland.

It was the first time at the show for Ruaview Scotch Tape – a sire with real Simmental characteristics, with size, scope and frame structure. This bull was an almost unanimous choice by the six breed judges.

The Simmental section was dominated by the Glenathony exhibits with all championships in the breed classes being taken, with the exception of the Reserve Champion Bull. That went to Sue Wylie, who is a great show animal presenter assisting the Glenanthony Stud. Glenanthony Nina won the Inter-Breeds Senior Cow Challenge.

Regular exhibitors Sandy Stuart and Robert Mitchell from Raglan won the Champion and Reserve Females in the other breeds section, and went on to win the inter-breeds 2-year-old and yearling heifer classes – two immaculately presented entries that showed breed traits that appealed to the judges. From these exhibitors also came the winning cow and calf inter-breed class in Wairau Sassy. It was a competition judged on type and production assessed by the growth rate of her calf at foot.

This proved the maternal attributes that the cow extended to her progeny, together with the sound conformation of her calf.

The ever popular Hereford section resulted in prizes to CR and SM Burgess in the two-year-old and yearling heifer classes. The winning senior bull, Leeland’s Acquisition, exhibited by Gary, Lorraine and Nic Peters from Otorohanga, won the Hereford Supreme Champion Bull, and continued on to be judged Reserve Champion Inter-Breeds Bull – a fine specimen of the breed, with structural soundness and prominent muscling.

A staunch show supporter, Dr Lockwood Smith from Matakohe, was also successful in the other breeds section with his winning Belgian Blue bull, Woodleigh Omen, a 6-year-old tipping the scales at 1360kg.

This sire has won numerous championships throughout Northland recently, and won his section with ease. The stud also won the 3-year-old female and bull calf classes.

It is fitting that Dr Smith, a senior Member of Parliament, can display a real sense of agricultural achievement. This is a contribution that has been very effective in bringing together the “country comes to town” concept so that urban people see a small part of the life of country people.

The Auckland balmy weather attracted crowds in big numbers to the show, and along with all the large variety of entertainment the animal events were very popular.
